Maxim Alexandrowitsch Opalew ( Russian Максим Александрович Опалев ; born April 4, 1979 in Volgograd , Soviet Union ) is a Russian canoeist , Olympic champion and eleven-time world champion.

Athletic career

At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney Opalew won a silver medal in the single Canadier over 500 m. With 2: 25.809 min he was almost a second behind the gold medalist György Kolonics from Hungary.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Opalew was third behind the German Andreas Dittmer and the Spaniard David Cal in the single canoe over 500 m with 1: 47.767 min .

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing Opalew was able to win the gold medal in the single Canadier over 500 m. With 1: 47.140 min he crossed the finish line about a second ahead of David Cal.

From 1997 to 2007 Opalew won 11 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals at the Canoe World Championships .

From 1999 to 2010 Opalew won 14 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals at the European Canoeing Championships.

Opalew is the world record holder for the distance of 500 meters in singles (1: 45.614 min, 2002, Szeged). In 1999 he was voted the best athlete in Russia.

Life after exercise

After the European Championships in Trasona , Opalev resigned and became deputy chairman of the Volgograd Oblast Sports Committee . He is also the deputy chairman of the Sports Commission of the National Olympic Committee of Russia .

In 2009 Opalew decided to return to the sport to compete in the London Olympics in 2012 over the 200m distance. However, he could not qualify, in his place Ivan Shtyl traveled to London, who won a bronze medal.

Private

On December 27, 2008, Opalew married Olga Tscheblakowa, with whom he had been together for 11 years.
