Bernd Olbricht

Bernd Olbricht (born October 17, 1956 in Gnoien ) is a former German canoeist .

Bernd Olbricht started for SC Neubrandenburg , where he was trained by Helmut Hörentrup and Horst Kautzke. Since 1976, the then 19-year-old Olbricht and the experienced Joachim Mattern, who was eight years older than him, formed a double in a two-man kayak , which had already defeated the world's elite before the 1976 Summer Olympics . At the games in Montreal , the team won the gold medal over 1000 m and the silver medal over half the distance. For these successes he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. A year later they won the 500 m title at the World Championships in Tampere . He has been riding a Rüdiger helmet since 1978 . The new doubles won the world title over 500 m straight away. As in 1979, he also won the world title in a four-person kayak . At his second Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 , Olbricht was able to start again successfully. In the four he won gold over 1000 m, in the two bronze over 500 m. For these successes he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

After his active career, Olbricht studied and became a teacher. He later worked in Neubrandenburg as a trainer for the DOSB . After reunification he started his own business with a small taxi company.
