Joachim Mattern

Joachim Mattern (born May 2, 1948 in Beeskow ) is a former German canoeist and canoe trainer .

The canoe racers of SC Berlin-Grunau won at the Olympics in Montreal in 1976 in the double kayak (with Bernd Olbricht ) over 500 m of gold and over 1,000 meters silver medal. For these successes he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In 1977 he became world champion in two-person kayaks over 500 m and vice-world champion in two-person kayaks over 1,000 m.

Until 2005, Mattern was the national coach of the kayak men at the German Canoe Association and then devoted himself to the youngsters at the federal performance bases. In 2009, due to an illness of Rolf-Dieter Amend, he was reappointed to the support staff of the German national team.
