The DKV was the main initiator and founding member of the International Canoe Association and is the professional association of the German Olympic Sports Confederation responsible for all types of canoeing . He is also a member of the German Nature Conservation Ring .

history

On March 15, 1914, the constitution took place in the hotel "Zum Kronprinzen" in Hamburg on the initiative of the Canoe Club Alsterbrüder (CCAB) and Alfred Korn. On January 8, 1920, the first issue of the association magazine “ KANU-SPORT ” (which is still published today) was published . The number of clubs increased rapidly and in 1931 reached 462 clubs with around 50,000 members.

In 1934, when all organizations were brought into line, the DKV was converted into the specialist office for canoeing in the German Reichsbund for physical exercises and therefore dissolved in 1945 like all Nazi organizations. In 1938 there were around 1,128 clubs with 500 boathouses and 44,129 members. In 1937 the DKV assumed a total of 250,000 boat owners in Germany, almost exclusively with folding boats and most of them were from Klepper (the shipyard produced 90,000 units by 1935).

In 1949 the DKV was re-established. His area was initially limited to the American and British zones in West Germany, later to the entire area of the then Federal Republic. Similar to the federal form of government, the DKV was designed as the umbrella organization of its regional associations. In 1952 the DKV was accepted into the International Canoe Federation . At the Olympic Games in Helsinki he took part with ten athletes and won three bronze medals. In 1955 the number of members had grown to 40,000 and the number of associations to 614.

Leisure and competition activities took on more and more diverse forms in the following years. Numerous new disciplines found recognition in the association (including the organization of German championships). In spring 1991, the DKV merged with the German Canoeing Association (DKSV) of the GDR .

In 2014, the DKV celebrated its 100th anniversary and at the same time the 120,000th anniversary. Member. Since 2005 there has been a steady increase in membership at the DKV, which consists of around 1,300 clubs and 18 regional associations, making it the largest canoeing association in the world.

The DKV Board of Directors is made up of the six-person DKV Presidium , which makes all fundamental decisions. The three-person full-time management is responsible for day-to-day business. Main areas of activity

Recreational sports

The majority of the members are active in canoeing recreational sports (especially canoeing ). The DKV coordinates the numerous events in this area and strives to qualify its members. Individual speakers take care of special areas such as white water paddling , coastal canoeing , safety , folding boats , hydraulic engineering , hiking competitions, etc. One of the main concerns of the association is the protection of waters and ensuring that they can be used by canoeists. In view of the fact that nationwide more than 800 waters are closed for canoeing in whole or in part for nature conservation reasons , he tries to find amicable arrangements with those involved in conflicts and was able to achieve moderate arrangements for several sections of the river. He also works with the Federal Canoe Association.

competitive sport

DKV organizes competitions and training in eleven competition disciplines and sends national teams to international competitions. The starting points of the association include the appointment and support of the cadre athletes in courses by the association's own national coaches, the training of coaches and referees, and the definition of competition regulations .

education

The clubs and state canoe associations offer numerous canoe courses for beginners and advanced learners, in which mostly non-members can also take part. The DKV conducts numerous licensed courses for trainers and supervisors and, as the competent professional association, provides the DOSB trainer licenses for canoe racing , canoe slalom, white water racing, canoe polo and canoe kite (each A, B and C license) and canoeing (specialist trainer and canoe instructor B ) out. In addition, there are courses for youth leaders and trainer assistants as well as referees for the individual disciplines.

As a proof of qualification for paddlers, the DKV issues the five-stage European paddle pass Germany on a voluntary basis .

Associations that regularly offer qualified canoe courses open to non-members are recognized as DKV-recognized canoe instructors .

societies

The DKV is currently trying to network its clubs more closely. A first initiative was the establishment of a network of DKV canoe stations in which around 200 canoe clubs make their boathouses and club premises available to other canoeists to spend the night. For this purpose, certain criteria such as sufficient mooring facilities, space for tents or sanitary facilities have been defined that must be met so that an overnight place can be called a DKV canoe station.

The active canoe club initiative was started to honor innovative and exemplary active clubs .

service

In order to be able to offer more extensive services for canoeing, in 1981 the DKV outsourced its economic activities to its own subsidiary, DKV Wirtschafts- und Verlags-GmbH , based in Duisburg. This publishes the standard reference works for canoeists, the DKV river guides , as well as other specialist canoe books and calendars. It also relocates the KANU-SPORT association body , manages two of its own campsites and, as a mail order company, sells specialist canoeing literature and sportswear .
