The Association of German Sports Divers e. V. ( VDST ) is a diving organization organized in the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), where it is the umbrella organization for diving . The registered association with its headquarters and federal office in Offenbach am Main is recognized as a non-profit organization.

Furthermore, the VDST is the only German representative of the CMAS . With its 72,508 club members in 897 clubs, 10,184 direct members, 98 diving schools and worldwide affiliated dive centers as well as the 17 state diving associations, it had a total of 83,701 members in 2018. The VDST is one of the largest non-profit diving organizations in the world.

founding

Until 1954 there was no umbrella organization for diving in Germany. Therefore, the editors of the diving sports magazine Delphin, published by the former diving company Barakuda (1949–1986), published a call in issue 6 (September) 1954, according to which all interested diving clubs should send at least one delegate to the federal meeting of German diving clubs on October 17, 1954 in Düsseldorf. The International Hunting and Fishing Exhibition took place there at the same time. This should be the framework for founding an umbrella organization for diving.

There were representatives of the following associations:

  • German Underwater Club Braunschweig
  • German Underwater Club Düsseldorf
  • Working group for underwater science of the Geographical Society Düsseldorf
  • German Underwater Club Hamburg e. V.
  • German Underwater Club Hanover
  • Diving group Kiel
  • German Underwater Club Krefeld
  • German diving club Munich
  • South German diving club 1950 Munich
  • German Underwater Club Münster
  • Diving and yacht club Saar
  • Underwater research group Bodensee, Überlingen
  • Scuba diving group North Rhine-Westphalia, Viersen-Essen

The delegates founded the Verband Deutscher Sporttaucher e. V. The first (provisional) board consisted of Klaus Meißner (Hamburg), Jens-Peter Paulsen (Hamburg), Hans Reinerth (Überlingen), Rainer Schwarz (Munich, chairman) and Herbert Völsch (Krefeld).

Goals of the association

The goals of the VDST are (according to the association's statutes):

  • the promotion of diving and its development, especially in its youth sector
  • securing professional and interdisciplinary qualifications in the field of diving
  • Promotion of environmental protection in diving
  • Training according to the guidelines of the VDST

German diving badge (VDST-DTSA)

Young people aged 14 and over and adults can acquire various German diving badges (DTSA) in the VDST . These badges are the VDST qualifications for recreational divers . There are three different directions, each with successive diving training courses and graded training certificates or official stickers for the diving license and CMAS ID cards: scuba diving , apnea diving and nitrox diving . Diving certificates from many other organizations are recognized as a prerequisite for acquiring the next higher level of education. In addition to the German diving badge , the clubs of the VDST offer various special courses (for example orientation diving , night diving , etc.).

DTSA qualification

The VDST represents and communicates the basic rule that you should never dive alone, but always in diving groups of at least 2 divers. The diving license levels (also: certification level) are intended to enable the recreational diver to experience dives in groups at certain depths and in a certain diving group composition. A general overview appears here, more precise provisions for the qualification of the individual VDST-DTSA diving license levels can be found in the current version of the VDST-DTSA regulations.

  • DTSA✶ (CMAS✶): Diving partner - no more than one DTSA✶ is authorized to dive under the guidance of a diver with DTSA✶✶ (CMAS✶✶)
  • DTSA✶✶ (CMAS✶✶): Autonomous diver - entitled to conduct a dive with a diving partner with at least DTSA✶ (CMAS✶)
  • DTSA✶✶✶ (CMAS✶✶✶): Diving group leader - authorized to lead a diving group with at least DTSA✶ (CMAS✶)
  • DTSA✶✶✶✶: Diving organizer - authorized to lead diving groups and club trips with several diving partners, each with at least DTSA CM (CMAS und) and an emphasis on safety and emergency behavior.

Depending on the composition of the diving groups, the VDST gives recommendations for the maximum diving depths:

  • Diver ** with diver * 20 m
  • Diver ** with diver ** 40 m
  • Diver *** with diver basic 12 m
  • Diver *** with at least diver * 40 m

Time required for training

Calculation of the time required

Time required in hours to reach the corresponding level, based on an inexperienced diver.

Each dive takes 30 minutes into account.
Preparation times as well as arrival and departure to the diving areas and the theory dates are not taken into account.
The actual time required will be higher.
The time is calculated from the time units and mandatory dives specified in the regulations

CMAS Germany

In Germany , the VDST represents the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS). CMAS Germany is a work department of the VDST. The VDST takes on the German representation of CMAS International for the following organizations :

  • IAC - International Aquanautic Club (until 2012 Barakuda International Aquanautic Club)
  • DLRG - German Life Saving Society V.
  • FiT - Free international diving instructors
  • FST - Association of state-certified diving instructors
  • ICMC - International Committee od Marine Conversation
  • IDA - International Diving Association GbR
  • SUB - SUB Tauchsportservice GmbH - International Association for Diving Schools and Instructors
  • UDI - United Diving Instructors
  • VEST - Association of European Scuba Divers
  • VIT - Association of International Diving Schools
  • Barakuda Wassersport GmbH (since January 2017)

Association magazine

The association magazine Delphin , which was taken over by Barakuda (now IAC) in 1954 , with a circulation of around 20,000 copies, was initially transferred to Schmidt-Römhild-Verlag and shortly afterwards to Jahr-Verlag (since 2000: Jahr Top Special Verlag ), where it has been since 1978 relocated as diving .

In order to continue to have an association body independent of a commercial publisher, a new magazine was founded in collaboration with Schmidt-Römhild, Der Sporttaucher , which is still in existence today. In January 2006 Der Sporttaucher switched to Olympia-Verlag , in July 2009 to Publicom Z and since July 2018 it has been published by BWH GmbH (Buchdruckwerkstätten Hannover) under the name VDST-sporttaucher . The VDST-sporttaucher appears six times a year with a widespread circulation of 58,105 copies (as of 2017).
