Diving Instructor World Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diving Instructor World Association (DIWA) is an international organization for commercial diving instructors with approx. 580 members. It was founded in 1972 and is headquartered in Costa Rica . The European office is located in Zwingenberg ( Bergstrasse ).

history

In the 1970s there were almost only sports clubs in Germany that trained in diving. Commercial diving instructors could not join the existing association. Shortly after it was founded in Freiburg, it turned out that this was not just a German problem. In the United States, divers had been trained in commercial diving schools for a long time . DIWA became international and the first organization to offer commercial diving training in Europe. The seat was moved to Switzerland and later to Costa Rica.

In the past, DIWA has applied for admission to the CMAS several times . This was rejected each time on the grounds that DIWA was internationally active and only nationally active associations could be accepted.

The Diving Instructor World Association is a founding member of the International Chamber ( ICD ) for Technical and Commercial Diving. Their contents correspond to the requirements of the CAN regulations, the European standards EN 14153, EN 14413 and, since 2007, the ISO standards ISO 24801 and ISO 24802.

On October 13, 2013, Wilfried Dickes took over DIWA International as the new owner. The founder and long-time owner, Rolf Jedlitzke, retired.

Diving instructor training

All instructors are trained during a 9-day “International Training Course” (ITC). The responsible management is incumbent on the representative of DIWA International. Not only diving-specific topics are taught by experienced instructor trainers, the instructors (assessed) who are in training and further education are also involved in the teaching.

In addition to the theoretical, the content also includes the physical and diving skills. Particular importance is attached to safety and environmental behavior in diving operations. The standardized training procedures are taught and conveyed with the individual experiences and ideas of the individual participants. This makes it possible for methods and content to be constantly adapted and continuously improved.

The diving instructor training ends with a written exam (physics, medicine, equipment, diving procedures, environment) as well as the oral exam in seamanship, medicine, equipment and administration. The instructor trainers present assess the participants' performance in every phase of the training, in theory, practice and psychological and physiological condition. These are finally merged with the written and oral services. In principle, ICD observers are also present during the instructor training.

Cross-over procedures for certified instructors from other diving training organizations are also specified in detail and, if necessary, can also be carried out outside of the specified instructor training.
