The Professional Association of Diving Instructors ( PADI ) is an American company that offers diving training worldwide. With around 6,200 diving centers and 130,000 members in 183 countries, it is the world's largest commercial diving training organization . The diving training of the company, founded in 1966, is standardized worldwide and recognized by other diving organizations.

Companies

The Professional Association of Diving Instructors was founded in 1966 by John Cronin († 2003) and Ralph Erikson († 2006) in Morton Grove , Illinois.

According to its own information, PADI issued over 900,000 certifications annually between 1996 and 2015 , which corresponds to 56% of all diving training worldwide. Since the company was founded, more than 24 million divers have been trained, the proportion of women is 36%. Worldwide - in over 150 countries - around 6200 diving centers offer PADI training.

The company has subsidiaries in the following regions :

PADI Worldwide is headquartered in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. The current President and CEO is Drew Richardson.

Standards

The PADI standards define the content and procedures of all courses for instructors and assistants. The goals of these standards are to offer a uniform training system worldwide and to give diving instructors a legally secure framework for training. The standards are constantly being further developed and z. B. adapted to the latest developments or findings on diving physiology . Changes to the standards are sent to all instructors every quarter. The various manuals will be revised if necessary and can be obtained online, among other things.

Education system

The training system consists of standardized modules that are divided into theory and practice. Theory is mainly taught in self-study and by diving instructors, while the practice is taught exclusively by diving instructors in swimming pools or in confined water as well as in open water. At the end of each course a diving certificate (certification) is issued, which is recognized worldwide.

Overview of the PADI education system

Because of its wide international distribution, PADI diving schools can be found almost everywhere in the world . The standardization of diving courses means that a course that has already started can be continued at any other PADI diving school. A transfer from diving instructor to diving instructor is required.

Many other commercial diving organizations, v. a. from the US, offer a similar training scheme, with partly identical terms. Comprehensive training material for self-study can be purchased in a set (consisting of a course book, DVD (and the RDP diving table - optionally also computer dive manual) or other underwater maps) in the PADI diving schools. The training material is available in different languages and must be owned by every student since January 1st, 2006.

Recreational Dive Planner

RDP in the Nitrox variants 32% and 36%

The Recreational Dive Planner (RDP) is PADI's dive table. Compared to other associations, PADI is the only association next to SSI that has a no-stop table instead of a decompression table in the training program, since PADI does not plan or conduct decompression dives in the basic training program, as these require special training. Nevertheless, the RDP has included protection in case you accidentally dive too deep or too long.

The RDP is available in different versions. The best known is the normal table on an underwater map (slate), which is sufficient for basic training and with which repetitive dives can be calculated. The "wheel", which is used to calculate multilevel dives and does not have to be rounded up, is only required from the Divemaster course, but can also be taught in the Open Water Diver course . Recently there are also electronic versions of the RDP, RDP software for the PC, as well as an independent, small, electronic "pocket calculator" called eRDP. Furthermore, the first-mentioned table is also available in the Nitrox variants 32% and 36% as well as RDP equivalence tables for alternative Nitrox mixtures and for mountain lake dives. The RDP and the “Wheel” are also available in XXL versions for training.

All RDP versions are compatible with each other and can easily be changed during the calculation. However, PADI tables are incompatible with the tables of other associations, as these are based on different principles.

Project AWARE

The Project AWARE ( A quatic W orld A wareness, R esponsibility and E ducation) is incorporated by PADI 1989 profit foundation that has set itself the protection of the underwater world to the goal. Project AWARE is funded primarily through sales of AWARE products and donations. These revenues are in turn used in campaigns to educate divers and to restore damaged underwater landscapes.

Publications

The numerous course materials include a .:

  • The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving - The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving covers the five topics of physics, physiology, equipment, marine life and special activities. The work is necessary for training as a PADI Divemaster.

Magazines and Cooperations

  • The Undersea Journal - The company sends out the English-language magazine The Undersea Journal to all diving instructors every quarter , which covers topics related to diving, the diving industry and administration. It is published by the special-interest publisher Bonnier Corporation , a US subsidiary of the Swedish media company Bonnier .
  • Sport Diver Magazine - The English language Sport Diver Magazine is the official association magazine . It has been available for purchase in North America and Great Britain since 1999 in cooperation with the Bonnier Corporation.

Former collaborations

From 2009 to 2013 PADI cooperated with the German-language diving magazine Silent World . Most recently, 15,000 printed copies of the magazine were sent as free individual delivery to new diving students who completed one of the Discover Scuba Diving (DSD), Scuba Diver (SD) or Open Water Diver (OWD) courses at PADI. These copies have been provided with the PADI logo and the imprint “powered by PADI”. Since the beginning of 2014 the magazine has been cooperating with Scuba Schools International (SSI) instead of with PADI.

PADI training for astronauts

At the European Astronaut Center (EAC) in Cologne-Lind , all astronauts of the European Space Agency (ESA) are certified at least as PADI Advanced Open Water Divers . The underwater training in the pools of the EAC serves as preparation for the stay in weightlessness . Astronauts who are not yet scheduled for a specific mission are trained to become PADI Rescue Diver in a two-week course specially tailored to the needs of the astronauts .
