Project AWARE ( A quatic W orld A Wareness, R esponsibility and E ducation) is a global non-profit foundation that promotes nature conservation underwater, through diving training , clean-up campaigns and public relations .
history
In the 1980s a group of found himself PADI - Instructors together, which was concerned about the increasing destruction of coral reefs , not least by recreational divers . A project was started within the PADI company that dealt with the topic of " nature conservation and diving ". In 1989 it became a foundation independent of PADI.
A European branch was founded in Bristol in 1995 .
In 2009 Project AWARE entered into an extensive partnership with the non-profit Reef Check , which coordinates a program for the worldwide monitoring of coral reefs.
In 2011, Project AWARE decided to focus more on cleaning up underwater landscapes.
2014 Project AWARE received the award " Best in America " by the charity Independent Charities of America (ICA), for use for the protection of coral reefs.
working area
In addition to sensitizing divers for nature conservation, through training and the support of construction projects for artificial coral reefs , the main area of work of Project AWARE today is the cleaning and renaturalization of waters. All around the globe, lake, ocean and beach clean-up campaigns take place, in which volunteer divers remove rubbish and other foreign bodies from part of a body of water. Every year, Project AWARE, together with partners, organizes a so-called “International Beach Cleanup Day” on October 20th, on which numerous clean-up actions take place on beaches and in the water in front of them. Project AWARE is supported financially and partly also logistically by local diving centers, organized clean-up actions.
PADI offers several specialty courses for divers geared towards participating in Project AWARE. These include the courses: Fish Identification , Coral Reef Conservation , Project AWARE or Underwater Naturalist . The PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy course is also recommended by Project AWARE for the protection of the underwater world.
financing
Project AWARE is funded primarily through sales of AWARE products and donations . In addition to private donations, funds from other nature conservation organizations and funds from state conservation projects, PADI is still the most important donor. Divers have the option of Project AWARE to support financially by, instead of a normal PADI certification cards to purchase a AWARE certification card. For a donation of at least 10 euros, the diver receives a certification that has an underwater motif on the front. In 2008 and again in 2012, the Swiss watch manufacturer Doxa SA sold a limited edition of watches, some of which went to Project AWARE.
