The Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques ( CMAS ) is an international diving association founded in Monaco in January 1959 and headquartered in Rome . CMAS International is represented worldwide by various diving organizations. In the English- speaking world, the CMAS also appears under the name World Underwater Federation (WUF). The CMAS is an international umbrella organization for scuba diving and for sports that are derived from diving, such as fin swimming , underwater rugby , underwater hockey , orientation diving and apnea diving .
Scuba diving training systems
→ See also: diving license
The CMAS scuba diving training system consists of standardized courses divided into theory and practice. Theory is mainly taught in frontal lessons, while the practice is taught exclusively by diving instructors in swimming pools or in confined water as well as in open water. At the end of each course a diving certificate (certification) is issued, which is recognized worldwide. CMAS is mainly used in Europe. But there are clubs and diving schools around the world that train according to CMAS. Sometimes the licensees call the courses differently and offer intermediate levels or extensions. The licensees of the CMAS are called federations. There are national federations that are only allowed to train in their area and represent the CMAS in this country. In addition, there are few international federations that are allowed to train worldwide.
CMAS diver
CMAS offers a four-level education system to learn how to scuba dive. The most important training levels are standardized via the international standards ISO 24801-2, ISO 24801-3 and ISO 11121.

Other education systems

- CMAS apnea diver level 3
CMAS apnea diving instructor
For apnea diving instructors there is only one level at CMAS:
CMAS apnea diving instructor
- also CMAS Freediving Instructor
- Training in theory and practice for apnea divers
Members of CMAS
At the national level, CMAS is represented by one of its members. The member organizations regulate and organize diving training according to the specifications of CMAS in the relevant country and issue CMAS certifications. Some of these certifications deviate significantly from the framework requirements of the CMAS:
- the requirements are tightened
- intermediate stages are created
Due to these different designs of the CMAS system, z. B. Diving instructors only change the bandage (cross) up to the CMAS Moniteur **.
CMAS in Germany
In Germany , the CMAS is represented by the Association of German Sports Divers ( VDST ). CMAS Germany is a work area of the VDST . The VDST calls itself CMAS Germany and issues sub-licenses to various associations (EDA, IAC , ICMC, IDA , SUB, VEST etc.). These associations are not CMAS licensees, but have their training certified by the VDST according to CMAS.
CMAS in Switzerland
- CMAS.CH is responsible for diving training in Switzerland according to the guidelines of CMAS International.
- The Swiss Underwater Sports Association (SUSV, French: FSSS) also represents CMAS in Switzerland.
CMAS in Austria
In Austria , CMAS is represented by the Austrian Tauchsportverband ( TSVÖ ).
CMAS in Liechtenstein
In Liechtenstein , CMAS is represented by the Liechtenstein Diving Association ( LTV ).
CMAS in Luxembourg
In Luxembourg , CMAS is represented by the Fédération Luxembourgoise des Activités et Sports Sub Aquatiques ( FLASSA ).
CMAS International
In addition to the national representations and contractual partners of CMAS, there are some member organizations that operate internationally. These include: AED, DAN , IANTD, IPA Monaco and TDI / SDI .
In 2018, some international member organizations of the CMAS were removed from the public list of member organizations. From publicly available minutes of the board meetings of the CMAS it emerges that some national member organizations see their position as sole representative of the CMAS in their countries, through internationally active members, at risk. In particular, the CMAS Baltic, which is active in the VDST area, is mentioned in the protocols.

All these licensees can adapt the framework of the CMAS to their own needs. This can sometimes mean that the training courses, especially in the specialty and diving instructor areas, are no longer comparable. The levels CMAS * to CMAS *** and CMAS Instructor * to CMAS Instructor ** must, however, be comparable.
