Advanced Open Water Diver

Diver training level

Advanced Open Water Diver (abbreviated AOWD , German: 'advanced open water diver') is the name of a certification in the PADI and SSI training system. The Open Water Diver course is a prerequisite for this scuba diving training . The AOWD certification entitles you to dive to depths of up to 30 meters. There are diving areas that can only be dived with an AOWD certification or higher. After the AOWD certification, a diver can deepen his knowledge in the Rescue Diver course. In the German-speaking area, only the English name is used.

While basic diving training - such as the Open Water Diver or CMAS one-star course - focuses primarily on the diver himself and how to use his own diving equipment, the AOWD training focuses on the perception of the environment (the sea or the lake ) as well as learning optional techniques and procedures.

Dissemination and standardization

Overview of the PADI education system

PADI and SSI call the course Advanced Open Water Diver . CMAS does not know this training level. Parts of the AOWD course are included in the one star course, others in the two star course. Some CMAS associations such as B. IAC , however, offer their own AOWD courses. These anticipate parts of the two-star training and thus simplify the training path to become a two-star diver. SSI regards its Advanced Adventurer as equivalent to the PADI AOWD. The SSI AOWD lies between the PADI AOWD and the PADI Rescue Diver. NAUI calls the AOWD certification Advanced Scuba Diver . BSAC, on the other hand, calls it Sport Diver .

In contrast to the Open Water Diver or Divemaster certification, the Advanced Open Water Diver certification is not standardized according to ISO or DIN .

Course content

The PADI AOWD course consists of five theory lessons and five open water dives. The lessons of deep diving (30 m) and underwater navigation are compulsory. The remaining three theory lessons and dives from a number of specialty areas ( Specialties are elected), z. B .:

In contrast to PADI, SSI has to complete 4 specialties.

conditions

The prerequisite for an AOWD course is the OWD or an equivalent certification and diving practice that was not too long ago. A current diving fitness certificate is required in most countries and by many diving organizations. Student divers wishing to attend a PADI AOWD course must be at least 15 years old. At SSI, 24 dives are required as a prerequisite. A PADI Junior AOWD course can be attended from the age of 12. Apart from a depth restriction of 21 m, these children's diving courses only differ from adult courses in that they convey the same content in a way that is suitable for children .
