The Divers Alert Network (DAN) is an international network for improving safety while diving . It offers assistance, insurance, and training for scuba divers , diving instructors and diving doctors . The international organization is based in Durham (North Carolina) , United States.

history

The organization was founded in 1980 in the USA and Italy under the name National Diving Accident Network by diving doctors. The founding was preceded by the knowledge that in the case of diving accidents, there is usually insufficient specialist knowledge available. The quickest possible coordination of rescue measures, such as transport to the next decompression chamber , was often associated with considerable difficulties.

In 1991 various regional associations were merged to form the International Divers Alert Network . Organizationally (e.g. member maintenance, negotiation of insurance benefits), the associations that are still independent are DAN America , DAN Europe , DAN Southern Africa , DAN Japan and DAN Asia-Pacific .

As of March 2017, DAN Europe has almost 100,000 members.

The organization maintains central emergency numbers worldwide, which can give diving medical advice from specialists in the event of diving accidents and check the availability of decompression chambers . In addition, diving emergency centers receive financial and technical support.

DAN also supports research into diving safety and the further development of diving equipment and emergency equipment. Among other things, DAN conducts first aid courses that are tailored to maritime situations, such as oxygen delivery in emergencies, medical re-ventilation or semi-automatic defibrillation in the event of cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation .

The insurance policies are generally recognized by diving organizations as proof of insurance for diving instructors . The waterproof insurance card is accepted in some countries as proof of financial coverage for medical treatment.

Alert Diver

Alert Diver is the organ of DAN. In addition to articles on diving safety and the like, it contains a. also articles about diving destinations and the marine environment with pictures by renowned underwater photographers. In addition to the print edition, the online magazine of the same name is published.

Print output

The English-language magazine published by the American underwater photographer Stephen Frink appears quarterly with a print run of over 170,000 copies. According to DAN, the magazine is read by around 230,000 active divers, making it the largest-circulation diving magazine in the world.
