Jaroslav Černý (Egyptologist)

Jaroslav Černý , (born August 22, 1898 in Pilsen , † May 29, 1970 in Oxford ) was a Czech Egyptologist .

Černý studied at Charles University in Prague from 1917 to 1922, and completed his habilitation there in 1929. From 1925 he took part in French excavations in Deir el-Medina / Thebes . In 1946 he was appointed Professor of Egyptology at University College London . He then worked from 1951 to 1965 at Oxford University . His specialty was hieratic script , the New Kingdom and New Egyptian literature. In 1953 he became a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy .
