Personalities
The best known resident of this small town was Terry Fox (1958–1981). He is the only person in Canada who is immortalized on a coin . Every year, Terry Fox runs ( Marathon of Hope ) are held in many countries around the world to raise funds for cancer research . After Fox lost a leg to bone cancer, he set out to walk across Canada. He started in 1980 on the Atlantic, but then had to give up in Thunder Bay , Ontario, after 143 days and 5373 kilometers run for health reasons. He passed away a year later.
Another resident of Port Coquitlam gained a rather inglorious notoriety: On December 12, 2007, Robert Pickton was sentenced to life imprisonment for at least six manslaughter. He has been dubbed Canada's worst serial killer in the press. In court, the pig farmer was only able to prove six murders of prostitutes. Overall, the press assumes that at least 68 women have been killed, in some cases more than 70 victims are mentioned. Pickton is said to have been extremely brutal in the murders, so that many of those involved in the process had to seek psychological help. On February 23, 2016, it became known that a biography written by Pickton ("Pickton: In his own Words") had been smuggled out of prison and published by Outskirts Press in Denver. The book was offered for a short time via the Amazon mail order business, but was removed from the sales platform after public protests. The publisher apologized to the victims' relatives for appearing.
