history

In 1827, the trading post Fort Langley was founded on the lower reaches of the Fraser River by the Hudson's Bay Company . It started out as a fur trading post and after the beaver and sea otter populations were exhausted, it was switched to catching and preserving salmon .

To the south of it, the area around what is now Langley was developed in the second half of the 19th century in connection with the Cariboo gold rush . The first settlers were the brothers William and Adam Innes, after whom the settlement was named "Innes Corner". At the beginning of the 20th century, the area was further developed in particular through the connection to the Canadian Pacific Railway . In 1911 it was named "Langley Prairie" after a post office was built. Other smaller parishes emerged that now form the Langley District . Within the limits of the original settlement, which took on more urban development, the town of Langley was founded on March 15, 1955, with about 2000 inhabitants.
