New Westminster is a city in the metropolitan area of Vancouver in British Columbia , Canada .
geography
New Westminster is on the Burrard Peninsula on the north bank of the Fraser River . The city is 12 miles from Vancouver and borders Burnaby , Coquitlam and Surrey . The city has an area of 15.3 km².
history
In 1859 New Westminster became the first capital of the new colony of British Columbia . Queen Victoria chose the name because Westminster was her favorite part of London . This gave New Westminster the nickname the Royal City . The Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) is based in New Westminster.
Demographics
The 2011 census showed the city had a population of 65,975. The city's population has increased by 12.7% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in British Columbia only grew by 7.0%.
