history

When the Spaniards reached the west coast of Canada and discovered the island in 1791, they named it Isla de Apodaca . 1858-1859 it was renamed by George Henry Richards, the captain of the HMS Plumper, after Rear Admiral James Bowen , the commander of the HMS Queen Charlotte . With the renaming, the naming of the islands in Howe Sound was continued after those involved in the sea battle of the Glorious First of June .

At the time of its discovery by European explorers, the island was a hunting and settlement area for the Squamish .

Bowen was largely uninhabited and insignificant until the 1870s, when former Vancouver residents came and built here. The Bowen Island Municipality administration has existed since 1999 . The island became the second island municipality in British Columbia and is currently the only one that exists.
