action

At the beginning of the film, Anna Ivers is in a psychiatric hospital. She talks to her therapist about a recurring dream of being at a beach party with boyfriend Matt. When this goes too far, Anna flees and finds a girl's corpse in the forest. She runs back to the house, but something is different. Suddenly the boathouse where her sick mother Lilian was staying explodes. This perishes in it.

Anna is admitted to a clinic after a suicide attempt. When she is released, her father, Steve, picks her up and brings her home, where Steve now lives with Rachel Summers, the former carer of her sick mother. Here she meets her sister Alex again.

Anna's friend Matt makes hints; he knows what happened on the night of the fire that led to her mother's death. From then on, Anna, who is haunted by daydreams and visions, suspects that Rachel started the fire. The suspicion is borne out when her boyfriend Matt is allegedly killed in an accident on the lake.

While Rachel throws a party to celebrate the sisters' father's book release, Anna and Alex do a phone call to find out if Rachel Summers really exists. You ask both the state nursing association and the driver's license office and ask for the social security number. When Rachel wants to get dressed up in the evening, Anna confronts her with the results of the research, whereupon she threatens to inform the psychologist with Anna's father and to send Anna back to the psychiatric hospital.

When Steve has to go on a business trip, the situation between Rachel and the two sisters worsens. At Matt's funeral, Anna sees the girl from her dream again, who leads her to the place where she is buried with her two brothers.

Anna and Alex do some research on the internet and find out that Rachel Summers is not their real name. You will also find reports of the murder of three children by a certain Miss Wright, the children from Anna's visions. It was then that the nanny Mildred Kemp fell in love with her boss, a married man whose wife died. It is reported that Mildred Kemp could not be sent to prison. In one photo, the children's mother is wearing the same pearl necklace Rachel always wears. Unfortunately Rachel overhears the two sisters during their research. Anna and Alex look through the keyhole of Rachel's bedroom and see that the pearl necklace is in the jewelry box. While Alex struggles along the facade of the house and goes back to her room, Anna is supposed to get Rachel's key. Suddenly Anna hears a rumble and a short time later sees that the door to the bedroom is open. When she enters, Rachel is standing in the doorway. She implores Anna to finally take the pearl necklace, which means nothing to her. Rachel tries to inject Anna with a drug, but she knocks her down. Anna runs back to Alex's room, noticing that Rachel, too, received an anesthetic, but is still conscious and lying on the floor. Anna is summoned by her sister to go to see the town's sheriff, Sheriff Emery. She tells him everything she knows and also shows him the pearl necklace. He remembers the murder of the family, which caused quite a stir at the time and also that the perpetrator Mildred Kemp was never convicted. He tells her to wait in his office where Anna falls asleep. When she wakes up again, Rachel stands in front of her with a syringe while the sheriff holds her, which allows Rachel to give Anna the drug. While Anna is slowly losing consciousness, she is undressed by Rachel, who explains to her that she will never have children of her own. Anna tries in her twilight state to grab the knife that is on her bedside table, but Rachel catches her. Suddenly Alex stands in the door, but Rachel does not notice her. She holds her index finger over her mouth and tells Anna to be quiet.

When Anna wakes up again, she sees a long trail of blood. She follows her out to the garbage can where she finds Rachel dead. Suddenly Alex appears and explains to Anna that she had no other choice. The two sisters embrace. Steven comes home. Anna explains to him that Rachel was not who he thought she was as there were never any entries about a Rachel Summers, that Rachel killed her mother and that Alex now killed Rachel to prevent the worst. Anna's father then reveals to her that Alex and her mother died on that night of the fire. Suddenly only Anna is there. She sees herself with the blood-smeared knife in her hand in a reflecting window pane and runs to the boathouse.

She remembers what really happened on the night of the fire: Anna had come home early from the beach party and discovered her father while having sex with Rachel. Shocked and beside herself with anger, she ran into the boathouse and got a can of gasoline from the tank there. She met Alex there. Anna left the boathouse and after her her sister too. As the door slammed shut, a candle fell on the floor and ignited gasoline that had dripped out of the tank. At the moment when Alex returned to the boathouse because her mother lying there had called for her, an explosion occurred, which Anna had to watch.

Anna had only imagined her sister's presence when she returned from the clinic. Anna is revealed to be responsible for the deaths of Matt and Rachel - she pushed Matt off a cliff when he revealed to her that he was aware of what happened that night. She also managed to stab Rachel with the knife that she was hiding under when Rachel turned around to get Anna's nightgown.

When Anna is picked up by the police the next day, Sheriff Emery tells Anna's father that Rachel's name does not match the name on her ID, whereupon he explains that Rachel changed her name to her real name because of her violent boyfriend Rachel Worshinsky is. The sheriff goes on to say that Anna got it into her head that Rachel was a woman named Mildred Kemp. He asks why she should have made all this up.

Anna is brought back to the clinic the next day. When the therapist, whom Anna knows from her first visit, asks if she is okay, she says that she did what he asked. He doesn't know what she means, though. Then she says that she has finished what she started. A short time later she meets her roommate again. She holds a pearl necklace in her hand and closes her door. The name Mildred Kemp is on the door sign.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films thinks that the remake translates the material into “atmospheric images and music”, but all too soon everything is lost in the “banality of history”.

TV Spielfilm judged that the film offers a "remarkably independent version of the material" compared to the original.
