Richard Stephen Dreyfuss (born October 29, 1947 in New York ) is an American actor who became known in the 1970s for classic films such as Jaws , Close Encounters of the Third Kind and American graffiti . In 1978 he won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in The Subtenant .

Life

Richard Dreyfuss grew up in Brooklyn and Queens before moving to Los Angeles with his family at the age of nine . At fifteen, he made his acting debut in the TV movie In Mama's House . In the late 1960s and early 1970s, in addition to minor television roles, he also played on Broadway and other theaters. He had his first short appearances in movies in 1967 in The Valley of the Puppets and The Graduation .

He had his breakthrough in 1973 with George Lucas ' film American Graffiti , in which Harrison Ford and Ron Howard also starred. Dreyfuss became one of Hollywood's most sought-after actors with films like Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (both by Steven Spielberg ) .

In 1978 he won an Oscar for best leading actor and a Golden Globe for best actor in musical or comedy for his role in The Subtenant . By 2003, when Adrien Brody was honored, Dreyfuss was the youngest actor to ever win an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Since the late 1970s, however, the actor also suffered from bipolar disorder , the symptoms of which he initially combated with alcohol and illegal drugs. In the early 1980s, the Dreyfuss films were less commercially successful. He was arrested after a car accident in 1982. After a diagnosis of the psychiatric illness and successful lithium therapy , Richard Dreyfuss made his professional comeback in 1985.

A series of comedies produced by the Disney subsidiary Touchstone Pictures brought him great success - beginning with Zoff in Beverly Hills (1986) . For Disney himself, he played Fagin in a TV version of Charles Dickens ' Oliver Twist in 1997 .

Since the film The Jaws Norbert Gescher has established himself as his permanent dubbing voice. Occasionally it was also dubbed by other speakers, including Frank Glaubrecht , Lutz Mackensy and Kaspar Eichel .

Private

His marriage to Jeramie Rain had three children. In 1999 Dreyfuss married Janelle Lacey. He has been married for the third time since 2005. Dreyfuss is a member of the Freemasons Association .
