action
Four women in their 60s have had their monthly book club for 30 years, studying suggested literature. Vivian, who owns a hotel, meets Arthur, whose marriage proposal she turned down 40 years ago. They start flirting, but Vivian has always refused to settle down because she enjoys her independence. Diane has been widowed for a year and her daughters want her to join them in Arizona. Sharon is a federal judge who divorced 15 years ago. Carol is happily married to Bruce, who recently retired.
One day they read Fifty Shades of Gray and are partly taken with the content. Diane meets Mitchell while on a flight to her daughters in Arizona. The two start a relationship, although Diane hesitates because her husband died a year ago. Vivian spends more time with Arthur, but her fear of commitment keeps him at a distance. Carol is frustrated by her husband's refusal to have sex with her and as she reads the book she realizes that they are missing something. Sharon opens an online dating account.
They also read Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed and try to figure out how to solve their problems. Diane's daughters continue to pressurize her to move to Arizona, but she doesn't want to leave her friends. She sneaks away to see Mitchell, and when her daughters can't reach her, they send the police to look for her. After discovering her with Mitchell, they insist that she move into one of their homes, ending her relationship with Mitchell. Eventually, Diane tells her daughters that even though she is older, she doesn't need surveillance. She packs up her things and goes to Mitchell, where they resume their relationship.
Arthur asks Vivian to commit to a relationship and she refuses, despite Arthur's assurances that he would like her to continue to be independent. Shortly after Arthur leaves for the airport, Vivian realizes she made a mistake and tries to follow him but misses his plane. When she returns to her hotel, Arthur is waiting for her and they resume their relationship.
Carol, frustrated that Bruce refuses to have sex with her, tries various ways to seduce him, but he doesn't realize it. Finally, she adds Viagra to his beer . He gets angry because that's not the problem, but admits he's stressed because he's retired and doesn't know what to do with himself. They make up after dancing together on a talent show.
After a few meetings with men she meets online, Sharon decides it is not for her. She gives a speech at her son's engagement party, where she states that all people deserve to be in love and to be happy. She reopened her online dating account in the hope of finding someone else.
criticism
"An unbalanced first film, which fluctuates between romantic comedy and rough jokes, which only occasionally gains in appeal because of the four main actresses."
