Mary Steenburgen (born February 8, 1953 in Newport , Arkansas ) is an American film and television actress as well as Golden Globe and Oscar winner.

Life

Mary Steenburgen made her film debut in 1978 under the direction of Jack Nicholson in the film Der Galgenstrick , for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of best young actress. In her next film Escape into the Future, based on the novel by Karl Alexander , she stood in front of the camera at the side of David Warner and Malcolm McDowell . She married McDowell in 1980. The couple, who have two children together, separated after ten years of marriage. For her role in the tragic comedy Melvin and Howard , Steenburgen was awarded an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1981. After that, she increasingly took on supporting roles in movies. So she worked in Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy in 1982 and starred in Ron Howard's A Wahnsinnsfamilie on the side of Steve Martin and Dianne Wiest in 1989 . In Back to the Future III she took on a role and lent her voice in the animated series based on the character Clara Brown . In the 1995 biopic Nixon , she played the mother of the 37th President of the United States , played by Anthony Hopkins .

In addition to feature films, Steenburgen also appeared in television films and series. In 1996 she worked in the two- parter Gulliver's Travels . In 1995 she met Ted Danson while filming , whom she married that same year. In 1999 she was again part of the cast of a television epic: In Noah's Ark - The Greatest Adventure of Mankind , she played the leading female role alongside Jon Voight and F. Murray Abraham .

She and her husband appeared again in 2002 in Talking to Heaven, directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal . From 2003 to 2005 Steenburgen was part of the cast of the television series The Heavenly Joan and played the mother of leading actress Amber Tamblyn in this CBS production . In 2007 she was again in front of the camera for John Sayles. In the independent film Honeydripper , she played on the side of Danny Glover and Lisa Gay Hamilton . Other supporting roles in Hollywood productions such as The Stranger Inside You with Jodie Foster or The Stepbrothers with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly followed.

Steenburgen received both the Golden Globe and the 1981 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Melvin and Howard . She received further nominations for Der Galgenstrick and Ragtime . In 2009 she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
