The Gallows Rope is the title of a 1978 American western comedy in which Jack Nicholson starred and also directed. The female role was cast with Mary Steenburgen , who made her film debut.

action

Henry Moon is an outlaw, a little cattle thief and burglar, ultimately a little fish who hasn't exactly discovered work for himself. When trying to escape from some deputies to Mexico , he is caught by them and taken prisoner. And as a cattle thief of death by expecting him Galgenstrick - not would apply as in the area a special decision that allows that outlaws can be saved from the rope when a local woman willing to marry the convicted. Moon is lucky in misfortune: Literally at the last second, a young lady is found who is ready to marry him.

Julia Tate , who is "willing to marry", has her own ideas about marriage and sees the criminal as a welcome, even necessary worker, rather than a man. Because you have the railroad at your neck planning a route through your country. Her great hope rests in the gold mine , which she inherited from her father. The only problem is: the mine has not yet dropped an ounce of gold. Julia hopes that Moon will give her the success she has hoped for, so that she can realize her dream of moving to Philadelphia .

Moon is quite annoyed by the work, especially since he has the appropriate compensation, e.g. B. in the form of marital amusements is missing. Not least because he realizes that Julia has never indulged carnal desires. This is how a dubious married life develops, one that is shaped by mutual distrust but also by the typical attraction of two completely opposing characters. When the two actually find what they are looking for, their partnership deepens, but to the same extent as the distrust. The relationship, which is not clearly defined, is spiced up by influences from other parties, such as the local Deputy Towfield , who sees himself being robbed of his bride by Moon. Or Moons former gang, who suspect that Moon has unexpectedly got rich and would like to cut their slice of it.

Mutual distrust leads to the fact that the question remains open until the end of whether someone will be ripped off after all. As it turns out, however, Moon is not playing the wrong game, but tries to keep his word to Julia. And so, despite the confusion in the meantime, there is still a happy ending .

Reviews

  • Western burlesque with a lot of situation comedy; Predictable and not very original, but sometimes amusing entertainment.
  • Nicholson's second directorial work is an exuberant, almost slapstick-like comedy, which wonderfully shows the rapprochement between a sword and a scraper.
  • Phil Hardy states that the film is "an infectiously enjoyable, laid-back western, staged by Nicholson with real charm" . Nicholson's direction is said to be "wonderful, for example in the wonderfully comical (...) shootout between the gang and the law at the end of the film."

Awards

The film received only one film award nomination. This was Mary Steenburgen . She was nominated for the 1979 Golden Globe for Best Female Film Debut in a Feature Film.
