Charles Richard Shyer (born October 11, 1941 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Charles Richard Shyer is the son of Melville Shyer , a co-founder of the Directors Guild of America , and Lois Shyer. He grew up in Los Angeles and after graduating from the University of California worked for a short time as an assistant director and production manager before turning to writing. He made his film debut in 1977 as a co-writer on the comedy Smokey and the Bandit . A little later he met his future wife Nancy Meyers and they wrote the script for the film Private Benjamin (Sagittarius Benjamin) together. In 1980 the two married. They continued to work together, so that other films such as Irreconcilable Differences (Triple Trouble), Baby Boom , Father of the Bride or The Parent Trap (a twin rarely comes alone - based on the novel Das doppelte Lottchen by Erich Kästner ) were made. Shyer is the main author of the hit comedy series, The Odd Couple ( Odd Couple ). He wrote other scripts for sitcoms for Getting Together and Happy Days .

In 1999, Shyer and Meyers separated after 19 years of marriage. They have two daughters together who are both actresses. Before his marriage to Meyers, Shyer was married to Diana Ewing from 1969 to 1974. His current wife has been Deborah Lynn-Shyer since 2004, with whom he has two other children.

Others

A project Shyer for 2012 is a production for HandMade Films whose plot on the children's book Eloise in Paris by Kay Thompson based dating from the 1950s. He wrote the script together with his daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer and Larry Spencer. Filming is scheduled to start on August 12, 2012, and will take place in Paris, New York and the south of France. Uma Thurman , Billi Bruno , Jordana Beatty and Nicky Jones are planned to be cast.
