Männerwirtschaft (original title: The Odd Couple ) is an American television series , of which 114 episodes were created between 1970 and 1975, 111 of which were broadcast on German television. It is based on the film A Strange Couple by Gene Saks from 1968 and on the play of the same name by Neil Simon .

action

The photographer Felix Unger was asked by his wife to move out of the shared apartment. He moves in with his old friend, the divorced sports reporter Oscar Madison, because nobody can afford the expensive New York apartment on Park Avenue alone .

Always correctly dressed Felix is a pedant , hypochondriac , obsessive cleanliness fanatic and committed hobby cook. Oscar, on the other hand, is a sloppy slob who doesn't care about cleanliness and order, but is primarily interested in sports and women. He's mostly broke, and his room, which Felix is the only one not allowed to clean up, is in extreme disarray.

Daily conflicts are inevitable. Often enough, they almost drive each other crazy, but their friendship lasts despite all the contradictions. The regular poker round with friends Murray, Vinnie, Roy and Speed is a must.

backgrounds

The sitcom Männerwirtschaft was originally called The Odd Couple and was directed by Garry Marshall . It is based on the play by Neil Simon , who wrote the sitcom in addition to the script for the film of the same name. The series ran from 1970 to 1975 and won several awards ( Golden Globe Award , Emmy, etc.). Jack Klugman and Tony Randall played the play The Odd Couple hundreds of times live on stage even after 1975.

In Germany, only 111 of the total of 114 episodes were broadcast. The episodes The Roy Clark Show , Our Fathers and The Songwriter were never dubbed and shown. The reasons for this are not known.

From the second season onwards, Männerwirtschaft was filmed with a live audience. With the German dubbing, however, it was decided to cut out the laughs that were still unusual at the time.

An apartment block 1049 Park Avenue, which is still standing today, was used for the exterior shots of the apartment building.

With the television series The Odd Couple , which has been shown since 2015, there is another series adaptation of the original material.
