Carole Augusta Shelley (born August 16, 1939 in London - † August 31, 2018 in New York City ) was a British - American actress .

life and career

Carole Shelley was born in London to a German father and a Russian mother, both parents were Jewish. Shelley began her acting career in England and also played minor roles in film and television, but without attracting much attention. She moved to the United States in the mid-1960s, where she worked for the rest of her life. Here she achieved first notoriety through her role in The Odd Couple , which she first played on Broadway , then in the film with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau and finally in the television series of the same name . Together with Monica Evans , she embodied attractive sisters from the neighborhood in both films and series. In the Disney films Aristocats , Robin Hood and Hercules , she could be heard as a narrator in the original English version.

Shelley took on a few supporting roles in film and television in the decades that followed, but mostly focused on her stage career. In 1979 Shelley received the Tony Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the stage actress Mrs. Madge Kendal in The Elephant Man . In 2003 she was seen in the world premiere of the musical in the role of the sinister Madame Morrible . In 2009 she received another Tony Award nomination for her portrayal of the demented grandmother in the stage musical Billy Elliot .

Carole Shelley died of cancer in August 2018 at the age of 79.
