Garry Kent Marshall (born November 13, 1934 in New York City - † July 19, 2016 in Burbank , California ) was an American film director , actor and film producer . He was known as "Hollywood's specialist in romantic comedies".

life and career

Marshall's father was of Italian descent and was actually called Anthony Wallace Marsciarelli , but changed his name to Marshall even before his son was born .

Garry Marshall graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in New York City in 1952 . He studied at Northwestern University in Evanston , where he worked for a student newspaper. He first worked as a writer for comedians such as Joey Bishop and Phil Foster , and later for the Tonight Show . In addition, he was also active as an actor; so he appeared in the 1950s on the television show by George Burns and Gracie Allen . In many of the later television series or films that Marshall shot or produced, he also took on small supporting roles.

In 1961 Marshall moved to Hollywood , where he first worked for television. He was responsible for the successful television sitcoms Männerwirtschaft (1970–1975), Happy Days (1974–1984) and Mork vom Ork (1978–1982). From the 1980s he worked mainly as a film director, where he was mainly responsible for romantic comedies. His greatest successes included the love comedies Pretty Woman and The Bride Who Doesn't Dare ; Julia Roberts and Richard Gere played the leading roles in both . He worked with Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino as the director of Frankie & Johnny , and on the 1986 film Nothing in Common with Tom Hanks . In the movie Never Been Kissed in 1999 he played the head of the newspaper for which of Drew Barrymore played reporter worked. In the same year he filmed Quite Normally in love with Juliette Lewis and Diane Keaton . In the new millennium he made other films such as Suddenly Princess (2001), Love on Detours (2004) and Valentine's Day (2010).

A good friend of his was the actor Hector Elizondo , who starred in each of Marshall's 17 films. Garry Marshall had been married to actress Barbara Marshall since 1963 , who appeared in some of his films. He had three children. His sister was the director Penny Marshall .
