action

The bitchy multimillionaire Joanna Stayton lives a meaningless life by the side of her loveless husband and is also monitored by her decadent, snobbish mother. In order to overcome boredom and senselessness for a moment, she hires the carpenter Dean Proffitt to convert a cupboard in her luxury boat. Then she refuses to pay Dean because, in her opinion, he used the wrong wood.

Shortly thereafter, an accident occurs: Joanna falls overboard of her yacht and loses her memory. Dean sees on TV that Joanna's husband pretends he doesn't know this woman. Dean answers because he wants her to work for him for a month in exchange for his unsuccessful honor. In addition, the single father of four sons urgently needs a nanny and he wants Joanna to work off her debts. Dean claims the woman with no memory is named Annie and is his wife and the mother of his four sons. He can't prove this, but the doctors at the hospital are so annoyed by Joanna's behavior that they don't ask any further questions. Joanna then moves in with Dean, runs his household and brings up his sons. In this role she gets better and better - after some initial difficulties - and Dean falls in love with her. Joanna also lives in the family, where she is needed and can move many things. With their help, Dean finances his own mini golf course that he has planned with his friend. She instills respect for the boys' teacher and school performance improves; the previously neglected house soon makes a much more neat impression. Dean tries several times to tell her the truth, but he doesn't succeed; last time Joanna doesn't believe him and the sons refuse to admit that she is not their mother. His best friend also persistently clings to the vertigo; he convinces Dean that he and Joanna belong together. Meanwhile, Joanna's husband has fun with younger women at sea.

After Joanna's mother has threatened her son-in-law to send him private mercenaries if her daughter does not turn up again, he seeks her at Dean's; her memory returns and she drives away with him. Her boat leaves the harbor, but on board Joanna, disgusted by the company of her mother and husband, decides to return to Dean and turns the boat around. After the husband notices the change of course in the morning, he takes over the command, nervously becoming more unstable, and turns the ship again.

Dean asks a befriended Coast Guard officer to follow the boat. The coast guard's boat is called for a mission shortly before reaching the luxury boat. The desperate Dean jumps into the water, which Joanna does a little later as well. Joanna's husband tries to shoot her, but is pushed into the sea by Joanna's loyal butler Andrew at the last moment. Dean and Joanna kiss while they are still in the sea, and Dean is impressed that Joanna wants to give up the luxurious life for him. Joanna replies that she doesn't have to forego anything because the entire property does not belong to her husband, but to her. Unsure about her wealth, Dean asks if he could give her anything, since she owns everything. Joanna replies that she wants a baby daughter.

Reviews

Roger Ebert described the comedy in the Chicago Sun-Times of December 16, 1987 as "warm" and "amusing". He compared the relationship between Hawn and Russell in the film to the relationship between Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart in the love story African Queen . He compared the development of the character played by Hawn with the development of her role in the comedy Sagittarius Benjamin . Ebert also praised the performances by Edward Herrmann and Roddy McDowall and the direction by Garry Marshall .

Rita Kempley wrote in the Washington Post on December 16, 1987 that she could not imagine that there was an even worse film about amnesia . She described the comedy as "banal" and its characters as "one-dimensional".

The lexicon of international films describes the film as a clichéd comedy, which, however, gains in originality and warmth in the second half.

The online edition of the TV magazine prisma sees an average story transformed into a firework of gags by well-acting actors and brisk staging.

Awards

Jamie Wild was honored for his role in the film prize Young Artist Award nomination in 1989, as did the film as Best Comedy .

Others

  • In the United States, the film grossed $ 26,713,187. In Germany (theatrical release: April 21, 1988) 347,862 viewers saw it.
  • Originally the film was longer and expanded to include a special relationship between the mother and the children. However, the studio didn't like the loose balance between the characters because they wanted a more grown-up film, so they sent Marshall back to the editing room, where he then cut the film to an hour and 50 minutes.
  • A remake under the title Overboard , with Anna Faris , Eugenio Derbez and Eva Longoria in the leading roles, opened in German cinemas on June 14, 2018.
