action

Judy Benjamin's husband dies on their wedding night. She is persuaded by US Army recruiter Jim Ballard to join the Army. In doing so, he leads her to believe that the barracks look like a luxurious hotel complex.

In the army, Benjamin is confronted with reality. There is a conflict with the female captain Doreen Lewis, Benjamin bullies at every opportunity. Benjamin's parents get an early discharge after eight days, and despite Lewis pressure, Benjamin decides to stay in the Army. During a maneuver, she takes the initiative and, thanks to a ruse, achieves victory for her group. This brings her to the attention of the paratrooper colonel Clay Thornbush, who offers her a transfer to his elite unit.

It turns out that the married Thornbush wants to seduce Judy. She will be transferred again, at her own request to the NATO headquarters SHAPE near Brussels . There she meets Lewis again, but also meets the French Henri Alan Tremont again, whom she had already met during her training in the United States. She leaves the Army for him after all - after her superiors have given her the choice of leaving Henri (because of his short-term membership in the Communist Party, he is classified as a security risk) or quitting military service.

Moved to Henri's representative family home, it soon became clear that the relationship between Judy and Henri did not work as harmoniously as hoped, as Henri paid too little attention to Judy, and was unable to suppress thoughts of his ex-wife a sexual affair with the maid begins. The situation escalates on their planned wedding day. Henri appears late because he prefers to help his divorced wife in a nervous crisis. In front of the assembled wedding guests and relatives who have traveled from the United States, Judy announces that she does not want to marry Henri and she leaves him.

Reviews

Roger Ebert described the film in the Chicago Sun-Times of January 1, 1980 as "occasionally amusing". He said that the change in the film character of Goldie Hawn, in which she found self-respect, deprived the film of many comic moments. He greatly praised Harry Dean Stanton's portrayal, and also mentioned Eileen Brennan and Robert Webber positively.

Jeffrey Westhoff described the first half of the film as "great" in Northwest Herald and the second as "boring".

The lexicon of international films judged: "Long-winded comedy: only Goldie Hawn can bring some pleasure."

Awards

The film received three Oscar nominations: Goldie Hawn for Best Actress , Eileen Brennan for Best Supporting Actress, and Nancy Meyers , Harvey Miller and Charles Shyer for Best Original Screenplay . Goldie Hawn was nominated for the Golden Globe Award . Nancy Meyers, Harvey Miller and Charles Shyer won the Writers Guild of America Award .

Others

The film is one of the most successful American comedies in 1980. Based on the film, a television series of the same name was produced from 1981 to 1983 , in which Lorna Patterson played the role of Judy Benjamin , while Doreen Lewis played Eileen Brennan again . The series won a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for Brennan.
