Howard Zieff
Howard Zieff (born October 21, 1927 in Chicago , Illinois , † February 22, 2009 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American photographer and film director . His most famous film, Sagittarius Benjamin, was nominated for three Oscars in 1981.
Life
Zieff grew up in the Boyle Heights district in east Los Angeles. After studying art for a year at Los Angeles City College , he joined the Navy in 1946 and studied photography at the Naval Photography School in Pensacola , Florida . After leaving the Navy, Zieff attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena , California, and worked briefly as a cameraman for a local television station. In the 1950s, he began working as a photographer in the advertising industry in New York City . He shot many commercials for American television and returned to Los Angeles in the early 1970s to direct his first full-length feature film Schleuderpart . Eight more film productions followed in the next 20 years. In the early 1990s, Zieff fell ill with Parkinson's and retired in 1994 after the completion of My Girl 2 . He died in February 2009 as a result of his illness.
