action

Summer 1972 : Eleven-year-old Vada Sultenfuss lives with her father Harry, who runs a funeral home in his house, and her demented grandmother in the small town of Madison in the US state of Pennsylvania . Vada's mother died shortly after she was born. Harry Sultenfuss has no understanding for the needs of his growing daughter and pays little attention to her. Since Vada grew up in a funeral home and death is omnipresent in her life, she constantly imagines that she herself has deadly diseases - the causes of death of her father's clients provide her with plenty of nourishment. With Harry, Vada falls on deaf ears with her fears and so she regularly looks for her doctor, Dr. Welty, who, however, always certifies that she is perfectly healthy. At the end of each examination, Vada therefore questions his medical competence.

Beautician Shelly DeVoto comes into town with her motor home and accepts a job as a makeup artist at Harry's funeral home. Because of her job, Shelly spends a lot of time in the Sultenfuss' house and one day comes when Vada lies theatrically on the kitchen floor while she is eating, believing that she has prostate cancer . Harry and his brother Phil ignore Vada and calmly talk about work. Shelly later approaches Harry about this incident because she believes Vada has a problem with death. Harry reacts angrily and does not want to be given advice about his daughter. He later apologizes to Shelly and invites her to a bingo night, at the end of which they become a couple.

Vada spends most of her time with her best friend, Thomas J. Sennett, who is the same age. The reserved boy wears glasses, always has to be home on time for dinner and is allergic to “everything”. Together, Vada and Thomas J. go around the houses on their bicycles, go fishing or climb their favorite tree. For this reason, they are mocked as lovers by other children. While Thomas J. secretly likes this idea, Vada is in love with her teacher Mr. Bixler. She takes a literary course from him that is actually intended for adults , and steals the necessary money from Shelly's cookie jar.

One day Shelly's ex-husband appears at her house, accompanied by his brother, with whose help he wants to take away the mobile home she lives in from Shelly. Harry beats him up and tells the brother that he can visit Shelly's ex in his front yard, where he will bury him should he come too close to Shelly again.

When Vada's friend Thomas dies as a result of bee stings to which he is allergic, she is deeply depressed. Shelly accuses Harry of caring more for the dead than the living, prompting him to pay more attention to his daughter. He helps her come to terms with the loss of her friend and deal with it. Vada, who initially disagreed with Harry and Shelly's wedding in the room, now also accepts her future stepmother.
