Armand Anthony Assante, Jr. (born October 4, 1949 in New York City ) is an American actor .

Life

Assante's mother comes from an Irish family, the father from an Italian family. Armand Assante attended Cornwall Central High School , after which he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He made his debut in 1974 in Brooklyn Blues , a film starring then-unknown Sylvester Stallone . Assante played a tiny supporting role as a guest at a wedding. In the comedy Schütze Benjamin (1980) he had a bigger role alongside Goldie Hawn , in the film drama Love and Money (1982) he starred alongside Ornella Muti and Klaus Kinski . With the detective film In the Fangs of a Stranger (1987) followed a leading role alongside Ben Affleck . Noteworthy was his performance in the two-part television film Jack the Ripper (1988), for which he received Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. He starred alongside Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito in the award-winning film Jimmy Hoffa (1992) . His most highly regarded role was that of Mafia boss John Gotti in The Downfall of the Cosa Nostra (1996). For portraying the gangster, he received an Emmy and nominations for Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Assante was married to Karen McArn from 1982 to 1994. He has two daughters. His work includes more than 100 film and television productions.
