The adventures of Odysseus is the title of a two-part television film / mini-series (original title: The Odyssey ), which was advertised in 1997 as the "most expensive television film of all time". Template was the epic odyssey of Homer .

The film shows the dramatic journey of the Greek king Odysseus , who goes to the Trojan War and leaves wife Penelope and son Telemachus in Ithaca . After a 10-year battle, the war is won by a plan by Odysseus, but he then makes a fatal mistake. He mocks the gods and claims to assert himself without their help to have conquered Troy . The god Poseidon then curses him and lets the Greek and his crew wander around the sea year after year without the prospect of seeing Ithaca and, above all, his family again. In the meantime, she has to protect herself from Penelope's suitors, who assume that Odysseus is dead. Filmed on locations in Turkey and Malta , the Odyssey was filmed with elaborate special effects (which were awarded an Emmy ) and internationally known actors such as Isabella Rossellini and Christopher Lee .

The choice of locations is also geared towards the level of knowledge of tourists, for example the Corinth Canal became the strait between Scylla and Charybdis or the sintered terraces of Pamukkale, far from the sea, became the calypso island of Ogygia .

The Adventures of Odysseus had its US premiere on May 18, 1997 . The film was released on video on November 6, 1997 . On November 14 and 15, 1997, the two parts were broadcast for the first time on German television on ProSieben .

Idol

In 1955, Mario Camerini filmed the plot of the Odyssey in the film The Journeys of Odysseus with Kirk Douglas in the role of Odysseus . The plot there, however, is structured differently, so Odysseus, who is a castaway guest with memory loss with the Phaiaks , serves as the framework for the rest of the film. The individual stations on the odyssey are not identical, for example the island of the wind god Aiolos was not included in the 1955 film, but the sirens do not appear in the newer version .
