Marion Gable

Marion Giebel , née Müller (* 1939 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German classical philologist and editor , author , translator and editor in the field of ancient Greco-Roman literature.

After studying Classical Philology and German Philology, Marion Giebel (under the name Marion Müller) received her doctorate in Frankfurt from Harald Patzer in 1965 with a dissertation on Athena as the divine helper in the Odyssey . She then completed an apprenticeship in publishing and edited ancient and German literature as a publishing editor. She then went on to work as a freelance science writer as well as a translator and editor. She regularly accompanied them with radio broadcasts and events at adult education centers. She lives near Munich.

She is best known for her biographies published in the series of monographs by Rowohlt Verlag and her editions and translations of Greek and Latin texts ( Sophocles , Plutarch , Musaios ; Livius , Cicero , Augustus , Velleius Paterculus , Seneca , Quintilian , Pliny the Younger , Suetonius ) as well as various publications on ancient subjects (the oracle of Delphi , travel, ancient mystery cults , animals, dreams, gardens, literary guide through Italy) and various flora .

In 2019, Marion Giebel was awarded the Pegasus Pin by the German Association of Classical Philology . The award recognizes her outstanding achievement in making the culture and literature of the Greeks and Romans accessible to people today in countless publications in a vivid and surprisingly contemporary way.
