Harald Patzer

Harald Johannes Bruno Otto Patzer (born July 2, 1910 in Friedenau near Berlin ; † March 26, 2005 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German classical philologist who worked as a professor in Marburg (1948–1952) and Frankfurt am Main (1952–1978 ) worked.

Life

After graduating from high school in Potsdam (1928), Patzer first studied Romance studies , then classical philology at the Berlin Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität (with Werner Jaeger ) and at the University of Freiburg . In 1936 he received his doctorate in Berlin with a dissertation on the history of Thucydides . He then went to Marburg as a scientific assistant , where he achieved his habilitation in autumn 1939 with a paper on the origin of the Greek concept of nature. Shortly afterwards he was drafted into military service in World War II and deployed in Egypt and Greece. In 1944 he was retired from the Wehrmacht “as part of efforts to secure the future of German science” and continued teaching in Marburg. In 1948 he was appointed adjunct professor.

In 1952 he followed a call to the University of Frankfurt am Main , where he succeeded Karl Reinhardt at the Chair of Greek Studies . He was a member of the University's Scientific Society. For his 65th birthday, friends and students dedicated the Festschrift Dialogos to him. For Harald Patzer on the 65th birthday of his friends and students (Wiesbaden 1975). In 1978 Patzer retired. The Greek government appointed him Commander of the Order of Phoenix in 1992 . Until his death, Patzer supervised 38 dissertations. His students include Justus Cobet , Herbert Eisenberger , Lutz Lenz and Ada Neschke-Hentschke .

His son is the classical philologist Andreas Patzer .
