Erwin Wolff (philologist)
Erwin Wolff (born March 29, 1897 in Berlin ; † July 18, 1966 in Bödigheim ) was a German classical philologist who was professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main from 1935 to 1962.
Life
Erwin Wolff, the son of an elementary school principal, studied Classical Philology at the Berlin University after the First World War with Hermann Diels , Werner Jaeger , Eduard Norden and Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff . In 1928 he was at Jaeger and north with the thesis of Plato Apology doctorate , the 1929 series Jaegers New Philological studies appeared. Wolff completed his habilitation in Königsberg as early as 1930 and taught there for a number of years as a private lecturer until he was appointed to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1935 at the instigation of the Frankfurt professor Karl Reinhardt . Here Wolff worked as a (initially extraordinary, from 1946 full) professor until his retirement in 1962. He spent his last years in his retirement home in Bödigheim , where he died on July 18, 1966 at the age of 69.
Due to a chronic illness that got worse over the years, Wolff barely had the time to publish his scientific research. Apart from his dissertation, only a few essays and reviews appeared from his pen; from 1934 to 1958 he published nothing. However, his present publications are highly valued.
