Christoff Neumeister

Christoff Neumeister (born December 18, 1933 in Chemnitz ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

After graduating from the Humanist Gymnasium in Chemnitz (1952, one year before the dissolution), Neumeister studied mathematics and physics at the Free University of Berlin and in Heidelberg . After the intermediate examination (1954) he switched to classical philology. His academic teachers were Otto Regenbogen , Franz Dirlmeier , Viktor Pöschl and Karl Löwith . In the academic year 1956/1957 Neumeister went as a post-graduate student to Yale University , where he completed the academic degree Master of Arts . In 1963 he passed the first state examination in Latin and Greek and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. His dissertation Principles of Forensic Rhetoric, shown in Cicero's court speeches , was published in Munich in 1964.

After receiving his doctorate, Neumeister worked as a research assistant at the chair for Latin studies in Heidelberg (with Viktor Pöschl). In 1968 he achieved his habilitation with the text The psychological historiography of Tacitus , which remained unpublished. In 1972 he followed a call to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where he was Professor of Classical Philology (Latin Studies) until his retirement in 2002.
