Robert M. Charlton

Robert Charlton Milledge (* 19th January 1807 in Savannah , Georgia ; †  18th January 1854 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party , of the State of Georgia in the US Senate represented.

After completing his legal training, Robert Charlton was inducted into the bar and began practicing in his hometown of Savannah. He had his first political mandate in 1828 as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives. In 1832 he was elected judge of the Superior Court for the Eastern District of Georgia; he also served as a federal attorney in the area for some time .

Charlton was Mayor of Savannah from 1839 to 1841. In doing so, he followed in the footsteps of his father, Thomas Charlton , who had held this post in 1815 and 1819. Eventually he was appointed to succeed the resigned US Senator John MacPherson Berrien , whose mandate he took over on May 31, 1852. Charlton remained in Congress until the end of the legislature on March 3, 1853 . He returned to Savannah, where he died shortly before his 47th birthday the following year.

The Charlton County , Georgia is named after Robert Charlton.
