Alfred Iverson senior (born December 3, 1798 in Liberty County , Georgia , † March 4, 1873 in Macon , Georgia) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1847 to 1849 he sat for the US state Georgia in the US House of Representatives . Between 1855 and 1861 he represented Georgia in the US Senate .

biography

Iverson was born in Liberty County where he attended local schools. He then studied at the College of New Jersey law . He successfully completed his studies in 1820. In 1822 he was admitted to the bar. From then on he worked as a lawyer.

Iverson gained his first political experience while serving in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1827 to 1830 . In 1830 he moved to Columbus , where he continued to work as a lawyer. Between 1835 and 1837 he was a judge in the Superior Court of Georgia. He was also politically active afterwards, from 1843 to 1844 he was a member of the Georgia Senate . In 1844 he was also a member of the Electoral College .

In 1846 Iverson was elected to the US House of Representatives as a representative of the 2nd constituency of Georgia. There he only served one legislative period and resigned in 1849. He then worked again as a judge at the Superior Court until his election as Federal Senator for Georgia . From 1855 he sat for Georgia in the US Senate. There he was chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Claims from 1857 to 1861 . Shortly after Georgia with other southern states of the USA released , had Iverson resigned as senator. After retiring from politics, he worked as a lawyer until 1868. Until his death in 1873 he lived in Macon, where he owned a plantation. Iverson was buried in Linwood Cemetery in Columbus.

Iverson was married to Caroline Goode Holt. Together they had a son, Alfred Iverson junior .
