Mack Francis Mattingly (* 7. January 1931 in Anderson , Indiana ) is a former American politician of the Republican Party . From 1981 to 1987 he represented the US state Georgia in the US Senate .

biography

Mattingly was born in Anderson, where he grew up. In the early 1950s he did military service in the United States Air Force . He was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah , Georgia. After his military service, he studied marketing at Indiana University . He completed his studies in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science . He then worked for IBM in Georgia for 20 years . He then left IBM and founded his own company, M's Inc. In: Brunswick .

From the early 1960s Mattingly became involved in the Republican Party. In 1966 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the United States House of Representatives . Between 1968 and 1975 he was vice chairman of the Republicans in Georgia, then for two years their chairman. In 1980 he was able to prevail against the incumbent in the elections for the Senate seat of Herman Talmadge with almost 30,000 votes. He then represented Georgia from 1981 to 1987, together with Sam Nunn , in the US Senate. Mattingly was the first Republican since Reconstruction to represent Georgia in the Senate. During his tenure he was a member of the following committees: United States Senate Committee on Appropriations , United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs , United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs , United States Congress Joint Economic Committee and the United States Senate Select Committee on Ethics . In the 1986 election, Mattingly could not prevail against his Democratic opponent Wyche Fowler .

After leaving the Senate, Mattingly was appointed Assistant secretary-general for defense support for NATO in Brussels by US President Ronald Reagan in 1987 . In 1992 he was President George Bush to succeed Dick Carlson for the United States Ambassador to the Seychelles appointed. He stayed there until 1993. Then he retired into private life. In 2000 he appeared again in public when he was defeated by Zell Miller in the Senate election.

Mattingly was married to Carolyn from 1957 until her death in 1997. They both have two daughters. He has been married to Leslie for the second time since 1998. They both live in St. Simons .
