history

Sao Tome played a key role in the primary capital accumulation of the Atlantic triangular trade . Emissaries of Afonso I in São Tomé asked John III. to priests to convert the Kingdom of Angola. The São Tomé government has been independent from the Lisbon government since 1975. Since 1999 Angola, Cameroon , the Democratic Republic of the Congo , the Republic of the Congo , Nigeria , São Tomé and Príncipe, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea have been part of the Gulf of Guinea Commission . Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe are members of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries .
