Lusaka [ luˈzaːka ] is the capital of Zambia and the province of Lusaka . It has 2,406,000 inhabitants (as of 2017).
geography
Lusaka is located about 1,250 meters above sea level on a plateau in southern Zambia.
history
The city was founded in 1905 by European settlers on the site of an African village and was named after its chief Lusakaa. In 1935 it became the capital of the British Crown Colony of Northern Rhodesia . With the independence of Zambia on October 24, 1964, Lusaka became the country's capital.
On July 1, 1985, there was a bomb attack on the main office of the African National Congress, which was then located here . A similar event occurred again on January 20, 1988.
On July 5, 2001, ex-Vice-President Paul Tembo , who had recently left the ruling party MMD and joined the FFD ( Forum for Democracy ), was shot dead in the street. On July 10, 2001, the 37th and final state summit of the Organization for African Unity ( OAU ) opened in the city.

economy
Lusaka is the economic and political center of Zambia. It extends over an area of 70 km² and is one of the fastest growing cities in Africa. The city center, especially Independence Avenue and Cairo Road, is characterized by commercial buildings with the typical services of urban civilization such as insurance, banks, the stock exchange, health sector, retailers, hotels, tour operators, sports clubs, etc. There is also industry (including Chilanga Cement Ltd .), Transportation and craft.
In a study by the consulting company Mercer on the quality of life in 231 cities around the world, Lusaka ranked 150th (as of 2018).

Lusaka is the country's urban center. The streets are paved in the further city center. Asphalt highways lead in many directions, via which all provincial capitals can be reached. After Livingstone , Ndola , Kasama and Nakonde lead Railroads. The Lusaka airport with international flights is located 26 kilometers northeast of downtown Lusaka.
Culture
The city center is Cairo Road, on which the New City Market and Kamwala Market are located, the city's shopping centers, and the Zintu Community Museum . To the east of it are the government buildings at Cathedral Hill and Ridgeway. Other suburbs such as Elizabetha Villa, Fairview, Kabulonga, Kabwata (a working-class district with the Kabwata Cultural Center ), Madras, Manda Hill (another shopping mall), Northmead (which is known for its nightlife), Olympia Park, Rhodes Park, Roma, Thorn Park and Woodlands. Points of interest are the Lusaka National Museum , the Political Museum , the Zintu Community Museum, the Freedom Monument, the building of the Zambian National Assembly (Parliament), the Musterfelder Agricultural Society (known for its annual shows), the Moore pottery, the Lusaka drama, a cinema, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, a golf club, the Lusaka Sports Club , the zoo and the Botanical Garden of the Munda Wanga Environmental Park. In 1964 the University of Zambia was opened there.
The city also maintains a twinning with Dushanbe , Tajikistan .
