Kafue is a town with 162,262 inhabitants (2000 census) at about 1000 m altitude on the river of the same name in Zambia . It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 150,217 inhabitants (2000 census).

economy

Kafue is Zambia's center of heavy industry , textile manufacturing ( Kafue Textiles Ltd. ), fertilizer production ( Nitrogen Chemicals Ltd. ), shoe manufacturing ( Bata Shoe Company Ltd. ) and metal processing. Their industry is also shaped by agriculture along the Kafue floodplains. The processing industry for agricultural products is therefore located in Kafue. This applies to sugar cane processing (sugar, gin), fish processing, the slaughterhouse and drying. Deposits containing 200 to 1000 tons of pink-white quartz are being mined 20 kilometers away, and more are suspected. Immigration has been high over the past ten years. The population of Kafue has quadrupled. Population pressure has caused poaching and illegal fishing to prevail in the extensive Kafue floodplains.

Infrastructure

Kafue is on the road and rail line from Lusaka to Livingstone . A railway line from Kafue via Chirundu to Zave and Harare is being planned, a road already leads there. A bridge has been crossing the Kafue River since 1993 . Kafue is 200 kilometers east of Kafue National Park and 44 kilometers south of Lusaka. The park and the city take their name from their location on the river of the same name.

Kafue has a range of tourist services with hotels and restaurants, but these are rarely used. Several protected areas are very easy to reach from here, especially the nearby Lochinvar National Park . About 40 km to the east is the Kafue dam with a lake.
