Nakonde is a place with 10,652 inhabitants (2006 estimate) on the Tanzam Highway 100 kilometers north of Isoka and on the TAZARA railway line in the province of Muchinga in Zambia . It is located 1300 meters above sea level on the border with Tanzania and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 75,135 inhabitants (2000 census).

history

Nakonde was part of Isoka District until 1997 when it became a separate district. 98 percent of the forest has been deforested, which has led to massive erosion in this high-rainfall area. Charcoal is reasonably priced in nearby Mbeya . The problems have now led to afforestation in the district. In 2000/01 alone 30,000 seedlings were planted.

economy

The area around Nakonde is sparsely populated and agriculturally oriented. Peanuts, corn, beans and soy are grown. In places there are coffee plantations up to Isoka. Despite its good quality, coffee has so far not established itself as an export good because it has to be shipped immediately. In Dar es Salaam , coffee was usually stored too long.

The city of Nakonde lives on the border. It is the only transition besides Mpulungu to Tanzania that does not only let people through. This is where the goods from the Dar es Salaam port are dispatched. That requires a whole range of private services as well as police, customs and tax officials. This creates a wealthy demand for goods.

Infrastructure

The T2 trunk road is paved or "paved" and leads from here across the border to Tanzania . The other paths around the village require all-wheel drive. There is also an unpaved, 1200 meter long runway.

education

There is a new school with three classrooms.
