Isoka is a town with 13,000 inhabitants (2006 estimate) on the Tanzam Highway north of Chinsali and Mpika in the Muchinga Province in Zambia . It is 1478 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 99,319 inhabitants (2000 census).

economy

Isoka lives from services on the highway and from the local market. Many people in Isoka are poor. The subsistence farmers cannot afford artificial fertilizers. The nearby Chambeshiauen offer high, but fallow potential for growing sugar cane, coffee, rice and sweet potatoes. The Mexican sunflower ( Tithonia diversifolia ) is planted as a hedge around gardens and fields. It is used as fish feed, and this plant significantly improves the quality of the soil. Incidentally, Isoka appears more in connection with drugs, because the highway is considered the axis of drug trafficking between East and South Africa.

geography

Isoka is 80 kilometers northeast of Chinsali . The foothills of the Luchewauen des Chambeshi and its tributaries begin directly north of the city, extending west and northwest 140 kilometers from north to south and 60 kilometers from east to west. Here a pontoon bridge leads over the Chambeshi.

Infrastructure

The border to Tanzania is 100 kilometers away. There are a few shops, a post office, a motel, a hospital, and elementary and secondary schools.

tourism

Six kilometers from Isoka there are three consecutive waterfalls. The first waterfall is about 15 meters high, the second 30 meters. To the east are the Mafinga Hills , to the south the valley of the Luangwa , which rises near Isoka, to the west the northern end of the Muchinga Mountains , to the north a plateau up to the Tanzanian border. The dominant tribe are the Namwanga.
