The Muchinga Province is one of the ten provinces of Zambia . It is located in the northeast of the state and borders Tanzania in the north, Malawi in the east, the Eastern Province in the south, Central Province in the southwest, the Province of Luapula in the west and the Northern Province in the northwest. The capital of the province is Chinsali . The province has 711,657 inhabitants (2010 census) and covers 87,806 km².

The name comes from the Muchinga Mountains .

geography

The province extends over both sides of the Muchingo Mountains and lies in the catchment area of the Zambezi River. The most important rivers in the province are the Luangwa , a tributary of the Zambezi, and the Chambeshi , a source river of the Luapula . The source of the Luangwa is in the province.

The province has three national parks: Lavushi Manda National Park , North Luangwa National Park and South Luangwa National Park . The latter is also located in the area of ​​the Eastern Province.

history

The then President Michael Sata announced the establishment of the province in October 2011. In November 2011, President Malozo appointed Sichone Minister of Muchinga Province. Later the creation of the province was passed by parliament .

Initially, the Muchinga had five districts. The Chama district was taken over from the Eastern Province. The rest came from the Northern Province. In 2013 the Mafinga District was created by dividing the Isoka District .

Traffic routes

The TAZARA Railway , which connects Kapiri Mposhi with Dar es Salaam , stretches from the southwest to the northeast.

Lusaka is connected to Tanzania by a road that crosses Muchinga and connects Mpika and Isoka .
