The Eastern Province ( English Eastern Province ) of the Republic of Zambia is one of the ten provinces of the country.

The capital of the Eastern Province is Chipata . Within the province lies the South Luangwa National Park .

In the province of 69,106 km², 1,592,661 people live (2010 census), 85% of them below the poverty line. 27% have access to drinking water, 50% are targeted. In 2017 the population was already estimated at 1,910,800.

The regions within the Eastern Province form stark contrasts. The area between Nyimba and Petauke is extremely fertile and hardly needs any artificial fertilizers. To the north, the soils become poorer from Katete to Chipata , but still allow a dense settlement through quite productive cotton cultivation. Further north there is almost only scrubland as well as on the rocky slopes of the Luangwa Valley . Lundazi is an almost isolated place, which is extensively surrounded by forest and animal protection areas that extend from the border with Malawi down to the Luangwa.

The province has very few natural resources. Gemstones are the only minerals found in the south. The province plays a more important role in informal trade in Africa. The border with Mozambique is completely open at Katete and Chadiza and therefore duty-free access to the South African market. In Lundazi in particular, this is an essential economic factor that extends north to Chiengi on Lake Mweru .

The central government is withdrawing enormous sums of money from the province. The districts of Katete and Chadiza alone paid US $ 600,000.00 for cotton in 2005. Mambwe District also has high profits from the safari business in South Luangwa National Park , but they are generated by a national authority. The opportunities in this province therefore remain largely untapped, the infrastructure is neglected and poverty is spreading.

The Chama was taken over from the Eastern Province to the newly founded Muchinga Province in 2011 .
