Nyimba
Nyimba is a place on the Great East Road , in the Eastern Province in Zambia from Lusaka 320 km and from Chipata 190 km away. It is 650 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 47,376 inhabitants (2000 census).
economy
Nyimba has fertile soils in the surrounding area. Green and red tourmalines are still being mined in the officially closed Hofmeyer mine by prospectors without a license . The district hardly needs any artificial fertilizers. Tobacco is mainly grown, but bananas, sugar cane, millet, rice, tomatoes, onions and peanuts are also grown. Goats, chickens and guinea fowl are also kept. When the river carries water in the rainy season, fish from the Luangwa come here and are caught.
In 2004, the Swedish International Development Agency installed larger solar systems there to electrify the place. This not only affects the clinic, the hotel, the gas station and the shop, but the entire population of the place. In 2005 it was decided to connect to the national power grid.
Infrastructure
The place is on the T4 trunk road . Nyimba has an unpaved, 1,000-meter-long airstrip, elementary and secondary schools, state and church health facilities, a shop and a gas station.
Others
Nyimba should not be confused with the fishing village of the same name in Lochinvar National Park on the Kafue further west.
