Chipata is a border town in Zambia near the border with Malawi . Chipata is the capital of the Eastern Province and the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 367,539 inhabitants (2000 census).

history

Chipata was repeatedly the target of large waves of refugees during the civil war in Mozambique . This characterizes this city and its surrounding area, because not all refugees have returned after the end of the civil war.

economy

Chipata is a market town of regional importance. Only Tete in Mozambique and Lilongwe in Malawi are comparable over a wide area . The city has schools and hospitals, shops and banks. The safaris in the animal protection areas of the Luangwa valley start here. That is why there are restaurants and hotels. The regional golf club with its own golf course was founded in 1906.

There are limestone deposits in the surrounding area .

Great East Road (T4)

Chipata is on the T4 highway . This comes from the interior of the country and ends after a few kilometers at a border crossing to Malawi. From there the national road M12 leads to Lilongwe.

The rail network of the Malawian Railway begins in Mchinji, 35 kilometers away . An extension to Chipata has been completed except for the laying of the tracks. Chipata is on the Great East Road from Lusaka to Lilongwe in Malawi, which leads over the difficult terrain of the Mpangwe Hills next to the Luangwa Valley, which is even more difficult to develop in terms of traffic .

The city has an air runway.
