Geographical location of Chiengi in Zambia

Chiengi is a place on Lake Mweru in the Luapula Province in Zambia . It is 1150 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 83,824 inhabitants (2000 census).

Chiengi is located on the western edge of the Mweru-Wantipa National Park in a difficult-to-access border area with Tanzania and DR Congo . The number of motor boats and motocross machines is high for this area. The much larger border town of Pweto , to which minibuses run regularly, is only a few kilometers to the northwest, while in the east and north there is only forest. This already proved difficult during the civil war in the Congo, when many militiamen sought protection here after the fierce fighting over Pweto.

Intensive agriculture is practiced in an estuary of almost 100 km² at the Mweruse lake. In addition, fishing is the main source of income.
