Geographical location of Samfya

Samfya is a place with 21,000 inhabitants (2006 estimate) at the southwest end of Lake Bangweulus in the province of Luapula in Zambia . It is 1,154 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 163,609 inhabitants (2000 census).

economy

Samfya is the largest place on Lake Bangweulus and the central market of the Bangweulus swamps as a whole. Above all, fish from the lake and the swamps are traded here. 57,000 tons are caught there every year. Samfya emerged as a fishing village in the middle of the 20th century and developed with the fish market, which was created here because the place is close to the Copperbelt , the most important market for fish.

Infrastructure

Samfya is located on the paved Chinese Road and is thus connected to the national trunk road network. The other paths in the district can only be passed with four-wheel drive. A mail boat supplies Mbabala, Cishi and Chilubi , the three main islands in Lake Bangweulus , from here . Incidentally, the lake and swamps are only supplied with the banana boat , the dugout canoe. There is a post office, a clinic (renovated since May 2006, equipped with solar-powered radio and light), a petrol station and an unpaved runway.

tourism

In October, the Njumbo Kwanga Festival takes place here over two or three days , with rites and traditional dances, but also food and drink.
