Mwense
Mwense is a place with 4,498 inhabitants (2006 estimate) in the province of Luapula in Zambia . It is 947 meters above sea level. The administration of the district of the same name has its seat in it. The district has 105,759 inhabitants (2000 census).
economy
On the Luapula River and in the Bangweul Marshes , fishing and fish farming are the main economic activities in the district. The fish ponds are in government hands. At the higher altitudes between 1200 and 1500 meters the cultivation of maize (2449 kg / ha average yield ) and cassava predominates with increasing yields. The soils are fertile and there is plenty of water. Overall, there is a wide range of products: beans, sunflowers, peanuts, tea, coffee, cotton and fruit trees such as mango, orange and lemon. Livestock farming includes cattle, dairy cows, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks and the production of eggs. The bottleneck is the lack of means of transport and thus access to the market. Towards the Kawambwa district there are 7,000 hectares suitable for sugar cane cultivation . There are one million tons of copper ore with 2.68 percent copper and 0.4 percent cobalt at the site. This Chebele open pit mine was for sale in 2006.
Infrastructure
Mwense is on the paved road from Nchelenge to Mansa . There is an unpaved, 1200 meter long air runway, elementary and secondary schools and two health centers.
Social
The dominant ethnic group are the Chishinga .
